Metfield Area Guide

Metfield is a small village of under 400 residents that sits between Halesworth and Harleston, set in the Waveney Valley.

Its name derives from Meadow Field, and its church dates back to the 13th century. The church has a sister parish in the US called Medfield.

Metfield offers a strong community spirit, local produce and easy access to nearby towns and amenities.

Although the village no longer boasts a village pub, it does have Metfield Stores, which is a community run shop that’s open seven days a week and is full of local produce. It also benefits from a set of allotments and even a chicken group. The village hall is very active and has a wide range of events throughout the month.

Metfield itself doesn’t have any restaurants but with within 5 miles, there are a number that we would recommend. The Broken Egg towards Harleston are perfect for brunch and The Fox and Goose in Fressingfield is a must for that special celebration. Harleston and Halesworth both benefit from Co-op supermarkets as well as a selection of butchers and greengrocer.

Metfield is only five miles from Harleston, which sits just off the A143, which connects Bury St Edmunds to Great Yarmouth. Metfield doesn’t have a village primary school anymore but benefits from two primary schools within three miles, Mendham Primary School and Fressingfield Church of England Primary School. The closest high school is Archbishop Sancroft High School.
