Eye

Eye is a pretty market town in North Suffolk, four miles south of Diss, sitting on the River Dove.

The name derives from the old English word for Island, because it would have been entirely surrounded by the river and marshland. After the Norman conquest, William Malet, constructed the castle and it’s ruins still sit in the town centre today.

Nestled in the Suffolk countryside, the charming town of Eye is known for its painted cottages, period architecture and vibrant community spirit.

The striking Town Hall, an unconventional building dating back to 1856, hosts the weekly market. This gained national recognition as a finalist in the 2009 BBC Food and Farming Awards, and continues to draw locals and visitors alike.

Boasting a rich history, epitomised by the Grade I listed church of St Peter and St Paul, which dates back to the 14th century. Nearby, the castle grounds provide a glimpse into the town’s medieval past. For outdoor recreation, the Town Moors is a hub for families and nature lovers, featuring a play area, skatepark, football pitches and woodland walks.

The town once had an impressive 22 pubs, but today the Queen’s Head, located behind the Town Hall, is the sole survivor. Walking around Eye, you will spot subtle nods to its lively pub history. The town centre also offers a selection of cozy cafés, including Coco Mama’s Chocolatier, Beards, and Cafeye. For something creative, visit The Bank, a community arts centre and café set within the old HSBC building.

A short drive from the town, you’ll find exceptional dining combined with comfortable hotels. The Auberge, with its two rosettes for culinary excellence, is perfect for a special meal. The Brome Grange and The Oaksmere both offer quality dining and accommodation, with the latter also boasting a fantastic beer garden complete with a children’s play area and a playful dragon sculpture.
