The house that Lynn built

Retirement meant little to Lynn Goldspink after she sketched out a plan for her dream home and brought it to life.

Lynn used to live next door to where the home now stands in Reydon near Southwold.  Her neighbours previously owned a bungalow on the land and she mentioned that if they ever wanted to sell to let her know.  After seven years they asked if she was interested.  After consulting Durrants Estate Agents and local architect Brian Haward, Lynn was persuaded to take on the challenge of project managing the building of a brand new home. The idea behind the shape and form of the house came over a pint of Adnams Spindrift and more importantly the Spindrift beer mat it sat on!

Lynn and her late husband had always renovated properties and in her retirement she says she was looking for something to do.  “I wasn’t working at the time and it kept me out of mischief,” she said.  So she sold her house in 2012 and moved into a nearby holiday home for a year while building took place.

Although she had project managed an extension to a home previously, this was the first time Lynn had been in charge of building a house from scratch.  “I’d always wanted to build a house but had never found anywhere that was quite right.”  After approving the designs drawn up by Mr Haward, the three bedroom steel and timber framed house arrived on the back of a lorry from Scotland.

Lynn said one of the attractions of building a bespoke property was the ability to include some of the comforts she had always wanted. “One the main things was to have under floor heating without the need for radiators around the house as well as installing three bathrooms.”

The house that Lynn built is now being sold by Durrants, as she wants to spend more time with her granddaughter near Beccles.  She says she will particularly miss the views from the property.  “We see spectacular sunsets and sunrises as well as being able to see the sea from here.  It would be ideal for someone coming up to retirement who wants a bit of peace and quiet.”

Lynn would encourage anyone thinking of building their own home to pursue their dream but has some handy advice.  “You have to keep your finger on the pulse and it’s all about having tradesmen you can trust to do a good job, otherwise I don’t think I would have done it.”
